Atlético Madrid v Sevilla Live Commentary & Result, 12/01/2021, Primera División

Atletico go four points clear at the top of La Liga after holding off a hardworking Sevilla side. Once the hosts took the lead early on through Correa, it was always going to be difficult for Sevilla to break them down. So it proved until Saul sealed the win for Atletico late on. Simeone’s team are looking unbreakable.

90′ + 4′ Oscar fires the corner in. It reaches Rakitic in the centre of the box but the Croatian can’t control his header, nodding wide. That will surely be that.

90′ + 3′ Joao Felix gets caught offside from Llorente’s throughball. Sevilla get their 12th corner of the game off Torreira.

90′ + 2′ Sevilla keep peppering Atletico’s goal but the hosts are not going to budge. El Haddadi’s shot from the left of the box hits a defender, as does Oscar’s follow-up from further out.

90′ There’ll be four minutes of time added on at the end of this game, largely from the time it took to treat Gimenez earlier.

88′ Atletico make one last change. Carrasco makes way for Felipe.

88′ Chance for Sevilla! From the first corner Rakitic hits the left post with a header from the right of the six-yard box from Oscar’s flick on. Carlos heads high and wide from the second. It’s just not happening for Sevilla.

86′ Sevilla get two more corners. Their corner count has reached double figures now.

84′ Sevilla make one last throw of the dice. En-Nesyri off. El Haddadi on.

83′ En-Nesyri wins a free-kick down the left as he’s fouled by Trippier. From it Torres fires over from way out.

82′ Atletico substitution. Suarez, who’s had nothing to do in this half, is replaced by Torreira.

82′ Sevilla get a half-chance in the box as Oscar’s swivel-and-shot is blocked. Oscar got the ball from de Jong’s header down. En-Nesyri arrives on the scene and blazes high and wide from close range! If Sevilla were going to score that was probably the chance.

80′ Sevilla force their umpteenth corner of the game. There’s a clash of heads between Carlos and Gimenez which leaves the Atletico man looking worse. Thankfully the defender is soon able to get to his feet. He looks OK to continue.

78′ Lopetegui reacts immediately, making two changes. De Jong is first. He’s on for Suso.

78′ The next player on to try to turn things around for Sevilla is Torres. He replaces Navas.

76′ Llorente’s burst of movement down the wing gave Atletico that goal. It looks to have given them a vital win too. Who can stop them in La Liga at the moment?

76′ GOAL! ATLETICO MADRID 2-0 SEVILLA! This Atletico side are so clinical. They’ve surely secured the three points here. Out of nowhere Llorente bursts down the right and finds Saul. Saul shoots from the edge of the area and finds the bottom right corner.

74′ Again Sevilla’s corner comes to nothing. The situation repeats seconds later with the same result. Atletico are simply locking Sevilla out.

72′ Suso drifts inside from the right and has a shot charged down. Sevilla keep trying and Navas wins a corner. Carrasco puffs out his cheeks. Atletico continue to work.

70′ Joao Felix is bundled over by Rakitic in the centre of the pitch, giving Atletico their first attacking opportunity in a while. The free-kick doesn’t bother Sevilla too much.

68′ Atletico haven’t had a shot in this half yet. For any normal home side that would be a cause for concern, but Simeone’s side are happy soaking up any pressure Sevilla put them under. They’re the masters at it.

66′ Simeone adds more fresh legs in midfield as Saul comes on for Lemar.

66′ Here are those Atletico changes. Joao Felix is on for Correa first.

65′ Sevilla force another corner which they take short and soon goes sailing out of play. Two players are about to come on for Atletico.

64′ Hermoso booms this latest Sevilla corner clear. Atletico aren’t getting out of their own half at the moment but don’t seem particularly troubled by that.

63′ Sevilla win a corner down their right off Gimenez. It goes out for another corner. Atletico are preparing a change now.

61′ Sevilla are starting to assert some greater control over the game. Carrasco is caught offside from Savic’s throughball.

Óscar Rodríguez

Joan Jordán

59′ Jordan is the player to make way for Oscar. Sevilla would certainly benefit from some more creativity.

58′ Atletico see the free-kick out easily. Here comes that Sevilla change.

57′ Meanwhile, Savic gets booked for a clumsy foul on En-Nesyri about 35 yards out.

56′ Sevilla are preparing a change. It looks like Oscar will be coming on shortly.

54′ Llorente picks up the pieces when Suarez slips in the box and knocks off a defender for a corner to Atletico. Sevilla do a decent job of getting rid of it.

53′ Ocampos thinks he’s bought his side a corner with a flick behind Trippier but the referee rules that the last touch came off the Sevilla winger. Lopetegui can’t believe it.

51′ Sevilla have a corner down their right. En-Nesyri tries to wriggle past two Atletico defenders near the opposite corner flag in the aftermath but comes out the loser.

49′ Atletico intercept Suso’s pass inside and Carrasco gallops down the left, attracting a foul from Fernando just wide of the box. The resulting free-kick is nothing to write home about.

48′ Koke earns himself the game’s first yellow card for a late, high challenge that leaves both him and his opponent on the turf.

46′ Acuna immediately tries to get Sevilla moving more quickly, having a first-time cross blocked. The visitors work the ball down their right and En-Nesyri smashes straight at Oblak at his near post. Oblak pushes the shot aside.

45′ Sevilla get the second half going. No changes at half-time.

Sevilla had close to 60 per cent of possession in that first half but only had one shot on target: that Rakitic effort in the second minute. Atletico just haven’t given them a clear sight of goal apart from that. How will Lopetegui respond in the second half?

Atletico are looking fairly relaxed as things stand. The title contenders took the lead through Correa’s cute finish and since then have held Sevilla at arm’s length. Sevilla threatened early in the half but have been guilty of overcomplicating things at times.

44′ Sevilla overplay again as everyone in Atletico colours comes back to defend. Kounde ends up conceding possession by clumsily handling the ball, giving Atletico a cheap free-kick.

42′ Lemar’s corner gets cleared immediately. No fuss from Sevilla there. The visitors are still well in this game but are doing little to worry Atletico for now.

41′ Carrasco jinks into the box and succeeds in winning a corner off Navas. Lemar trots over to take it.

39′ Atletico get a throw-in near their corner flag as another Sevilla pass goes awry. Every Sevilla attack is going down their right.

37′ Sevilla pass and pass in Atletico’s half but it breaks down when Suso misses a ball he should really collect. Atletico are managing the visitors’ threat predictably well.

35′ Sevilla are a little overeager to create chances at the moment. Their captain Navas, who has plenty of time down the right, crosses for El-Nesyri unnecessarily quickly and ends up making a mess of it.

33′ Atletico are quite content to let Sevilla control the ball in benign areas. Lemar buys a free-kick to cut the visitors’ latest attack short.

31′ Suarez goes for goal from distance, curling an effort towards the far corner at the end of a zippy Atletico move. Bounou is equal to it.

29′ It’s been quite a feisty affair so far with Atletico being their usual disruptive selves. They’ve committed five fouls to Sevilla’s one in this opening half hour.

27′ Lopetegui rages as Hermoso bundles over Ocampos. Sevilla get the free-kick but it proves to be much ado about nothing. No sooner does Rakitic whip it in does the flag go up against Kounde.

25′ Atletico almost double their lead as Bounou denies Suarez at the near post! Trippier fires in high this time and it bounces to the Uruguay veteran who takes it first-time on the half-volley. Bounou makes himself big to stop it going in.

23′ Sevilla win another free-kick down their right as Gimenez outmuscles Suso. Rakitic’s shot from outside the box deflects off Lemar for a Sevilla corner that Atletico clear.

21′ Oblak is staying busy, racing out to block as the ball runs for En-Nesyri in the box. It rebounds off the Atletico goalkeeper to Acuna who arrows wide of an empty net. That was a decent chance for Sevilla.

19′ Atletico claim for a penalty against Suso as the winger’s attempted clearance from inside his own box hits his own arm. The referee quickly waves the appeal away.

17′ GOAL! ATLETICO MADRID 1-0 SEVILLA! Correa gives Atletico the lead! It’s a smart finish from the Argentine who has time to turn and shoot in the box from Trippier’s cutback. It beats Bounou low at his near post to find the bottom right corner.

17′ Trippier can claim the assist. It’s not a bad return to the team for the Englishman so far as he’s seeing plenty of the ball.

15′ Llorente goes down under pressure on the edge of his own penalty area and ends up getting the free-kick. Atletico seem fairly comfortable at the moment.

13′ Sevilla get upfield quickly and seem keen to test Oblak at every opportunity as En-Nesyri fires wide from outside the box.

12′ Correa’s round-the-corner ball for Suarez doesn’t work out. Atletico come again but Acuna does well to get in the way of Trippier’s cross.

10′ Correa’s delivery from the right doesn’t find an Atletico player. Sevilla go up the other end through Ocampos who’s soon crowded out.

8′ It’s been quite an even start so far. Sevilla are playing a clear 4-2-3-1 with Rakitic behind En-Nesyri. Suso and Ocampos are staying extremely high up the pitch.

6′ Trippier swings it in and Hermoso’s shot from the centre of the box is blocked. The offside flag goes up against Correa as Gimenez tries to put the ball back in the danger area.

5′ Now it’s Atletico’s turn to get their first attack. Trippier is in space down the right and crosses towards Suarez and Correa. Fernando hands Atletico a corner.

3′ The corner comes in. Kounde flicks it on for Rakitic who’s lurking to the right of the six-yard box. The Croatian swings at it on the volley and Oblak raises his hands high at his near post to keep it out. It’s a promising start for Sevilla.

1′ Sevilla get a dangerous-looking free-kick in the opening seconds as Carrasco – playing at left wing-back in a 3-5-2 for Atletico – fouls Ocampos. The free-kick gets sent into Atletico’s box and Hermoso heads it out for a corner to the visitors.

1′ Atletico get this game underway!

The two sides are coming out onto the pitch here in Madrid. Atletico are in their usual red and white shirts and blue shorts. Sevilla are also in their first-choice all-white colours.

Atletico and Sevilla have drawn their last four encounters in La Liga, including their last two here at Wanda Metropolitano. Atletico have lost just one of their last 19 games against the Andalusians, though, while Sevilla haven’t beaten Atletico away in the league since September 2008. This will be a good test for both sides.

Atletico make one change from their 2-1 win away to Alaves nine days ago as Trippier returns to the starting line-up. The Englishman has been cleared to play after his betting ban was suspended.  Sevilla are unchanged from their 3-2 win over Real Sociedad at the weekend when En-Nesryi became the first Sevilla player to score a league hat-trick since Wissam Ben Yedder.

SUBS: Oliver Torres, Javi Diaz, Aleix Vidal, Luuk de Jong, Oscar Rodriguez, Alfonso Pastor, Karim Rekik, Sergi Gomez, Nemanja Gudelj, Franco Vazquez, Munir El Haddadi, Oussama Idrissi.

SEVILLA (4-3-3): Yassine Bounou; Jesus Navas (c), Jules Kounde, Diego Carlos, Marcos Acuna; Ivan Rakitic, Fernando, Joan Jordan; Suso, Youssef En-Nesyri, Lucas Ocampos.

SUBS: Sime Vrsaljko, Felipe, Ivo Grbic, Ivan Saponjic, Joao Felix, Saul Níguez, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Lucas Torreira, Mario Soriano, Renan Lodi, Vitolo, Miguel San Roman.

Standing in the way of that milestone are sixth-placed Sevilla who are a tough nut to crack, especially away from home. Julen Lopetegui’s team are unbeaten on their last four league games in the road and are one of just five teams to have won here at Atletico’s new stadium. Will Sevilla become the first club to best Atletico here twice?

Atletico have the chance to extend their lead at the top of La Liga to four points with a victory here after rivals Real Madrid could only draw 0-0 with Osasuna in the snow last weekend. Diego Simeone’s team are unbeaten in their last 19 home league games and will be confident of making it 20 in a row.
