Olympiacos inks veteran big man Koufos – News

Olympiacos Piraeus bolstered its frontcourt ahead of the final stretch of the regular season by signing veteran center Kosta Koufos until the end of the season, the club announced on Saturday evening. Koufos (2.13 meters, 30 years old) made his Turkish Airlines EuroLeague debut last season with CSKA Moscow, after spending 11 seasons in the NBA. He arrives on the same day Olympiacos announced center Hassan Martin will be sidelined for more than a month with a knee injury. Last season, in his 17 appearances in the competition, Koufos posted 3.7 points and 2.8 rebounds in limited opportunities. He also averaged 8.4 points and 5.2 rebounds in VTB League. Koufos will have the first chance to play in Olympiacos uniform this coming week in Round 26 against his former team, CSKA.

Previously in his career, Koufos spent the last four seasons with Sacramento after having also played for Utah, Denver, Minnesota and Memphis in his career, averaging 5.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 0.7 blocks in 686 regular-season appearances. Koufos helped his teams reach the playoffs on six occasions. Born in the United States to a family of Greek immigrants, Koufos has represented Greece at the international level and helped the Greek squad win a bronze medal at EuroBasket 2009. He is now set to play for a Greek club for the first time in his career.
