Men’s 200m Finals: Gold medal again for Lyles – Noah Lyles retained his world title in the 200 meters and broke Michael Johnson’s USA record in the process, clocking in at 19.31 to lead another medal sweep for the host nation.
The Olympic bronze medalist produced one of the fastest bends ever, covering the first 100 meters in 10.15. Citizens Kenny Bednarek and Irion Knighton finished second and third, and the three men retained these positions. The only change in the second half was that Lyles kept pulling away from his opponents.
When he stormed the finish line, the clock initially read “19.32” – a time that would have equaled Johnson’s national record. But soon it was corrected to 19.31. “My mood completely changed after that,” Lyles said.
Bednarik, who is recovering from a broken toe, took the silver in the season’s best, while 18-year-old Knighton took the bronze in 19.80.
Women’s 200m Final – Sherica Jackson Wins Gold: Sherica Jackson finally wins the gold at the World Championships. Jackson won the 200-meter title with the championship record. Jackson outstripped Winner Shelley-Ann Fraser-Price by 100 meters and completely outdid him. Jackson won the race in 21.45 seconds.
She took bronze over 400m in 2015 and 2019. Earlier in the tournament she took silver over 100m. Now, Sherica Jackson has a full set of world championship medals spanning three-distance sprints after winning the 200-meter race here in Oregon.
She did it in style, too, breaking the championship record by 21.45. This also smashes the Jamaican record set by Elaine Thompson-Hera, the second fastest in history after the long-running world record of 21.34.
It’s quite a turnaround from last year’s Olympics where Jackson failed to advance from the first round after loosening too much in her heat.
Here in Oregon, you can’t go wrong. 100m winner Shelley-Ann Fraser-Price had a slight lead off the corner, but Jackson’s superior speed endurance showed in the second half of the race as she opened a clear gap over her rivals.
Fraser-Price retained the silver medal with a time of 21.81 and defending champion Dina Asher-Smith took the podium again, taking the bronze with a score of 22.02.
